William Edward Burghardt "W. E. B." Du Bois was an activist who fought against racism for much of his life. He helped found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. Although Du Bois had become a socialist as a result of a trip he made to Russia, his politics were of the pragmatic variety, with Du Bois supporting the candidate he believed would do most for blacks, rather than who was closest to the ocialist party line.
