The Arawaks are the first people that Christopher Columbus met in the Caribbean. The Arawak did not have a central government but they did have local leaders called a cacique or chief. The leader was usually the son or nephew of the previous leader.

Cacique or chief is the term used for the head of Arawak society, a non-white indigenous South American community. The word means prince, head, king, leader or boss. Usually, they had more than 2 or 3 wives, as women found it an honour to marry them. Their word was law and they had special privileges and power over all aspects of social life. The position was mostly hereditary inherited through their mother's noble line rather than for possessing any special warfare skills. Their importance was based mostly on the size of the tribe. When a cacique died, his sister's son became his successor. If there was no familial heir, the chief was chosen from the brave young leaders in the community

They in turn introduced material culture to their society and indulged in commercial activities like sericulture, sheep and cattle ranching and sometimes had entailed estates called the cacicazgos. The cacique lived in large Spanish-style houses filled with Spanish furniture and wore European fashion.
