The first black, female Representative in the United States was Shirley Chisolm of New York. She served for 14 years, beginning in 1969. Four years later, in 1973, three other women joined her. They were Yvonne Burke, Barbara Jordan, and Cardiss Collins.
In 1619, the first representative in British North America met in the church at Jamestown. Like the early struggles of the colony itself this first assembly suffered.
