Who was the first African American to hold the position of attorney general?

You are probably asking about Eric H. Holder, who was appointed to the position of U.S. Attorney General by President Barack Obama in 2009. However, if you are asking about the states, rather than the federal level, one of the first African-American attorneys general of a state is Kamala D. Harris: she was sworn in as the 32nd Attorney General of the State of California in 2011, becoming the first African-American (as well as the first woman).
