The first African-American professional baseball player on an integrated team was Bud Fowler who played Lynn (IA) exhibition games in 1878. The first in the Major Leagues was Moses Fleetwood Walker when the Jim Crow laws were just starting to be in effect and before racism spread around America. He played on an integrated team, the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association, in 1884. He played for one year on the Blue Stockings and batted .263 in 152 at-bats. Over the next few years, about a dozen Black players played minor league ball. A ban on such players, somewhat unofficial, sometimes explicity, began about 1890. However, Jack Roosevelt Robinson AKA Jackie Robinson is considered the first black MLB player when he launched into the Majors in 1947 for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The Phillies first African American player was infielder John Kennedy whose first game with the team was April 22, 1957. I have no idea when he was signed. Kennedy's MLB career lasted 5 games. He had previous played in the Negro Leagues with the Birmingham Black Barons and Kansas City Monarchs.
