At the picnic Thomas Lincoln was conceived. Six months later, January 1812, Nancy's husband was out on a drunk leaving Nancy alone to fend for herself and her two little children. Over night there was a deep snowfall and in the morning there was no wood in the firebox. Nancy was already exhausted from the constant, never ending, hard work and she had to go outside in the deep snow to get firewood. She overexerted herself and had a miscarriage. The baby was stillborn.

He was devastated at the news, as he and his sister were very close, as children. His younger brother Tommy was born in either 1811 or 1812, as the records were not clear. Tommy only lived 3 days.
