It's not so much that he hated his father, as he didn't really get along with him.

Lincoln's mother died when he was a boy; his father had health problems and wasn't able to do all the farm work. So young Abraham had to step in, which he didn't particularly like. Beyond that, he simply didn't get along with his father- they were too different. Abraham enjoyed learning, reading and studying (he eventually became a lawyer, despite having little formal education), and his father did not share that passion.
