Texas was once governed by Mexico (1821 - 1836). In 1830, Mexican President Anastasio Bustamante outlawed the Immigration of Americans to Texas. Angry colonists demanded that U.S. citizens be allowed to immigrate. Although the Mexican government made several efforts to appease the colonists, this controversy ultimately spawned a rebellion that resulted in Texas' independence from Mexico.
