because Batista's troops were poorly trained and frequently ran away from battle or even joined the guerrillas where as Castro's troops were well disciplined and motivated also Castro, Guevara, Cienfuegos ect were talented guerrilla fighters and leaders so in the end although they were heavily out numbered they won the battles in the mountains and eventually took over the country
