The colonists were taking and clearing land that was the Native American's hunting grounds. At first the Native Americans were peaceful and made treaties with the colonists, but after the colonists just kept expanding, the Native Americans knew that had to fight for their land.

The base concept of land ownership are polar opposites in concept from Native American's to European.

European concepts of land are that one man can own more land than he needs to survive; for profit. Native Americans do not believe that any man can own land, much less to the exclusion of another.

It must be noted that several philosophers from Plato to Locke and Pufendorf did not believe in this concept of ownership as well.
