Booth was a Confederate sympathiser who planned to kidnap Lincoln and take him south, to be exchanged for a large number of war prisoners . However, Lee's surrender made this scheme impossible, so Booth, bitter at the South's defeat, and perhaps ashamed of never having served in the army (though perfectly fit for military service) decided to murder him instead.
Booth was a Southern sympathizer who wanted the South to win the War. His assassination of Lincoln was part of a conspiracy- the plan was to kill Vice-President Johnson and Secretary of State Seward that same night.

Booth apparently thought the death's of these people would give the Southern leaders inspiration to renew their fight for independence. I think he also had a hatred for Lincoln as a symbol of a tyrannical government , if not as a person.
