In addition, many of the necessities needed by the colonists came from Europe and the Caribbean and arrived at the harbors, which made these locations desirable for merchants.

not all cities were by the harbors, but the bigger ones were. the reason you would build on a harbor, is that you have access to the ocean, and then you can trade with Great Britain or the other british colonies(navigation acts) or smuggle stuff
