Direct quote from a family member- a Lieutenant who did two tours in Vietnam.

"War is never the answer to many unless it directly affects us,once it hits your home and hurts you will oppose it,sadly the media played a huge role in making sure horrible things and misconceptions were right on the 5 o clock news every day,i still wonder who's side they were on,i am not sure they will ever know"

In Short the Vietnam War was the first war to be covered by the media, they would be flown into a LZ after it was all clear to do interviews and take pictures, horrible battles were fought and then they expected these men to answer these questions and that turned into a lot of anger, commanding officers, most of them would literally kick them off the field, they did not believe in taking "snapshots" from one dead American to another, basically people stateside saw horrible images daily on the tv and just could not imagine how horrible it was, people did not understand war on tv and the media second guessed our U.S.A.F. all the time as they still do to this day.

***there are many other reasons including, politics, the draft,Americans(some) believed it was none of "our buisness, most men fighting this war were very young,i am unsure of the average age but i do know it was around 18 years old for most soldiers(once the draft started)they also are among the most K.I.A.)***

The number of US soldiers killed were reaching the point where the general public wanted the war to end. In the 1968 US presidential election, Lyndon B. Johnson decided not to run for reelection. Richard M. Nixon won the 1968 US presidential election by promising to end the Vietnam War. Nixon took a long time to keep his promise and war protests in the US continued.

The support for the Vietnam War began to dwindle by the late 1960s. This was because the war was affecting everyone, not just the lower economic classes.
