· Progressive party (A.K.A. Bull Moose Party) was a branch off of the republican party

· Taft and Roosevelt ended up with 50% of the vote

o Wilson had 43%

§ It split up something like this

· Taft: 25%

· Roosevelt: 25%

· Wilson: 43%

· Wilson became president because he had the majority of the votes

Taft and Roosevelt split the vote because technically they were both republicans and the vote should go to both of them, so it was split and Wilson won the election

It was because of conflicts between Taft and Roosevelt. In 1908, Roosevelt didn’t want to run for reelection, instead recommend his Secretary of War, William Howard Taft, who had the ideals as him. However, Taft’s approach was more careful, and quiet. Taft also lacked his expansive view of presidential power, he was a more successful administrator than a politician. However, at first, he initiated about 80 antitrust suits against large industrial combinations–twice as many as Roosevelt. But, he later stop “trust-busting”, and in general aligned himself with the more conservative members of the Republican Party. In 1909, Taft’s Payne-Aldrich Act was passed, the act did little to lower tariffs. Though more progressive Republicans expected Taft to veto the bill, he still signed it into law and publicly defended it as “the best tariff bill that the Republican Party ever passed.” During, his presidency, his decision to dismiss Ballinger’s leading critic, Gifford Pinchot, a conservationist and close friend of Roosevelt, break the last straw. Roosevelt left the Republican Party and create his own progressive party, the Bull mouse Party. In 1912 Roosevelt ran against Taft.
