In a secret treaty in 1800, spain returned Louisiana and the port to Frances' powerful leader, Napoleon. Now Napoleon planned to colonize the American territory. In 1802 , these developments nearly resulted in war.To avoid hostilities, Jefferson offered to buy New Orleans from France. Surprising, the french asked if the united states wanted to buy all of the Louisiana territory.the United states bought the land for about $15million - about three cents per acre. so it became known As the Louisiana Purchase.
The US wanted the area from France because that was a problem for the colonies under the British. The British would not allow their settlers to move past the Appalachian mountains but the colonists wanted to acquire more land. After the Revolutionary war the Americans wanted to acquire the land past the mountains because they wanted more land. When Jefferson bought the large amount of land in the Louisiana Purchase, it made it easy for American's to purchase the newly bought land from the federal government and continue the move westward.
