The Rosenberg prosecution was the lynchpin of the anti-Communist hysteria of that Era. The idea that American Communists (and their fellow-travelers) were part of a vast left wing conspiracy whose primary loyalty was to the Soviet Union was a central plank of the 1950s McCarthyism Red Scare and the purging of liberals of all types from government and private industry.
In 1953, the Rosenbergs, were executed for espionage in the US. They were charged with giving to the Soviets nuclear bomb secret information. Some present day historians and lawyers, such as Alan Dershowitz, believe that the husband, Julius Rosenberg was clearly guilty, however, he has found fault in the case of Julius' wife, Ethel Rosenberg.The USSR and the spread of communism was widespread in the US at that time. The Rosenberg case added fuel to that concern.

Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans was created in 1947.
They were Communist Party members in the 1930s (as were many people in the US). They were accused in the 1950s of spying for the communists. Alger Hiss may not have actually been a spy. The Rosenbergs were part of the chain of couriers of Atomic Bomb information from spies in Los Alamos to the Soviets. Julius was the courier while his wife Ethyl was only responsible for retyping the information.
