There were many reasons behind this war. was The obvious main reason that Britain was capturing American ships and took any sailors that had been in the British navy off the American and impressed them back into the British service. They took many who they only suspected of having been British. Both the French and the British ignored the rights of US neutrality during the Napoleonic Wars, so there were already hard feelings with the British.

The boundary between the US and Canada was in dispute and the British had never given up their forts in the US Northwest. Sometimes the British would arm the Indians and incite to attack the settlers. The United States may have seen an "opportunity " to grab land, while the British were deeply involved in a bitter war with France. The small number of regular British Army units in Canada was a further inducement for the land hungry Americans war hawks to invade Canada.

The one lasting effect of the war of 1812 was the first establishment of the international boundary, at least in the eastern part of the Canada /USA border, to east of Lake Michigan.

The impressing of American sailors into the British navy was one major cause.

The British interfered with US trade with France.

Contrary to treaty, the British did not withdraw all their soldiers from the US after the Revolution War ended. They kept some forts on American soil and gave the Indians arms with which to attack the US.

This war is sometimes called the second war for independence. The British did not honor their agreement to remove their troops from US territory in the Northwest of the US. They stopped US ships and removed former British citizens from their crews. They supplied the Indians with guns and tried to stir them up to attack US settlers. There was also a dispute about where the Canadian border lay.

The Americans declared war in 1812 for a number of reasons, including a desire for expansion into the Northwest Territory, trade restrictions because of Britain's ongoing war with France, impressment of American merchant sailors into the Royal Navy, British support of American Indian tribes against American expansion, and the humiliation of American honour.

One of the biggest reasons that the United States declared war on Great Britain in 1812 is because the British navy was attacking and capturing supply ships to the New World.

The main reason was the block the United States put on trade from one another (Britian and France). Another reason was to stop the practice of impressment of American Saiors.
