The workers were promised land to help the Virginia Company establish itself as an exporter of products in the New World to Europe. They worked primarily in the timber industry but also looked for other products that could be made in the New World and shipped to Europe.

The company controls various aspects of their lives, such as housing and goods prices, reducing their freedom and bargaining power. Additionally, the low wages and poor working conditions exacerbate feelings of exploitation and servitude.
