That was name of what was precieved as the last name of a respected person in America and there were more stories and tall tales about Gorge Washington's bravery and honesty. After slavery many blacks who didn't keep the last name of their masters took up that name. Freeman or Freemen were also chosen for obvious reasons but most kept the name of those masters. My mothers maiden name is McCree (from the master) and my fathers mothers last name was O Neal (from that fabulous massa) so it seems much better to take the name of such man who was bigger than life. Slave owner, good ole President Washington. If they only knew.
