Madam C. J. Walker (1867-1919) was an entrepreneur who used a good portion of her wealth as a philanthropist and political activist. She was especially well-known for her $1,000 contribution to a YMCA in Indianapolis's black community in 1912, for her $5,000 contribution to the NAACP's anti-lynching fund in 1919 and for her gifts to many black colleges, schools, churches and civic organizations. She spoke out on behalf of black soldiers during World War I and provided employment in her hair care products manufacturing company for thousands of African American women who otherwise would have been consigned to farm labor and household domestic jobs.
