The reason Mcarthy's famous 'red's under our beds' campaign is considered a witch hunt is due to the parallels it shared with the witch-hunts in Europe during the 1700's. Firstly both used fear as a means to alienate people and make them turn against each other under the illusion of an ongoing conspiracy. Secondly both incidents where on the search of an invisible enemy who caused 'some sort of damage to society'. And lastly both of them were exploited by various powerful individuals to gain power due to the paranoia of the average person.
