At first, the annexing of Texas had been refused by the United States. In 1844, Sam Houston (the Texan President) signed a treaty of annexation with the US. Although the Senate yet again refused to ratify the treaty, for fear the annexation of Texas would cause war with Mexico. Houston refused to give up, and pressured the US by pretending Texas was going to ally itself with Britain. This trick worked, and in 1845, Congress passed a joint resolution admitting Texas to the Union.

Florida used to be owned by Spain until 1819. Before 1819 however, it's been a land of freedom. Seminole Indians and runaway slaves lived there for protection from the United States. The Indians would raid Georgia and retreat back to Florida, the U.S. being powerless to stop the raids. If they did attack, they would wage war with Spain. After a while, the United States threatened to take care of the situation if Spain won't. They would march into Florida and take it over. Spain ceded it over in the Adams-Onis Treaty because they were going to lose it anyway and they were able to clear up other misunderstandings in the Louisiana Purchase.
Adams criticized Spain for not being able to control Florida and allowing Indians and outlaws to use it as a haven for attacks on the United States. He told the Spanish negotiator, "Florida is a derelict, sserving Spain no other earthly purpose than as post of arrogance to us." Spain ended givng Florida to the U.S. in return for $5 million.
