There used to be countless ways that whites and blacks were separated, since blacks used to be thought of as inferior to whites. The separation of the two races would anything from separate water fountains or sections of seats on a bus to blacks not being allowed to go into certain buildings or businesses. Almost every social and day-to-day activity had ways for blacks and whites to be separated.
It was just one form of outward demonstration of racism. Racism of all kinds is part of human relationships. It can't be eliminated, people have always and will always mistrust, fear, or hate people who are not like themselves.
Segregation was a method of keeping a group of people "in their place" by people who mistrusted and feared them. And it worked in the end, the segregationists were very fortunate that most of the power generated against them was peaceful.
