Awan is a South Asian tribe, putatively of Arab origin. The Awans are the Hashemite descendants of Hazrat Ali* (but by a wife other than the Prophet's daughter, Fatimah named Hazrat Hanfa). The bulk of those belonging to Awan tribe are not Shias. Awans are further descended from an individual named Qutb Shah, a ruler of Herat and a general in the army of Mahmud Ghazni.
*Hazrat Ali was the fourth Caliph of Islam and cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
