Amerigo Vespucci i think is how you spell it
Martin Behaim - he was a cartographer and he made the earliest known globe. He died in 1506. (So either my answer is incorrect or the date in your question.)
It was given its name by "Americans" but by a German map maker who had read Vespucci's account of finding North America so he named it after him.
