Such political pressure was enough to win independece in the British colonies that became Nigeria and Ghana, and in France's many Western African colonies.

World War II brought colonialism to a halt as the European powers were not able to focus their efforts towards stifling the rising nationalism movements in Africa and around the world (Vietnam, India, etc...).

Most countries gained independence by negotiation and agreement with colonial powers. The main exceptions were the Portuguese colonies of Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau because the fascist Dictatorship in Lisbon wanted to maintain its absolute control of those countries.
