He died while he was imprisoned in the Temple prison. He was first imprisoned with his father (Louis XVI), mother (Marie Antoinette) and his sister (Marie Therese Charlotte), but after the French beheaded his father, they put him in an isolation cell away from his family who he would never see again. He was kept in the isolation cell for two years until his death. He was abused in horrible ways by his keepers.
He probably died of the causes of abuse.
Louis Joseph and Louis XVII are two different people. Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI had two sons who lived past infancy. The oldest one was called Louis Joseph and died of tuberculosis shortly before the revolution. His younger brother was Louis Charles who survived their father and whom monarchist called Louis XVII. He was a sick boy and died probably also of tuberculosis as well as other factors from his imprisonment.
He died of Tuberculosis. it is said that on his deathbed, he asked to see his heir. When he asked who was in the room with him, the small boy supposedly told his father, "Louis XIV". To which Louis XIII is said to have replied, "Not yet, my son, not yet!"
