Ernest Shackleton died of a heart attack early in the morning at his home.

Yes, he died of a heart attack, but not at his home, it was aboard his expedition ship, The Quest, that was moored at Grytviken, on the island of South Georgia.

Shackleton left England aboard the Quest on 24 September 1921 bound for Antarctica. When the party arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Shackleton suffered a suspected heart attack. He refused a proper medical examination and would not seek treatment, so Quest continued south, and on 4 January 1922 arrived at South Georgia. In the early hours of the next morning Shackleton summoned the expedition's physician, Alexander Macklin to his cabin, complaining of back pains and other discomfort. A few moments later, at 2:50 a.m. on 5 January 1922, Shackleton suffered a fatal heart attack.

On 5 March 1922 Shackleton was buried in the Grytviken cemetery, South Georgia, after a short service in the Lutheran church.

Earnest Shackleton participated in several expeditions, notably one in the early 1900s when he led a team to the 'farthest south' -- a goal that motivated other explorers who followed him, to be the first to set foot at the South Pole.

As well, Shackleton is known for his preservation of human life: no person ever died on an expedition with Shackleton -- until, of course, he died on his last expedition in 1922. He is buried on South Georgia, in the South Sandwich Islands.
