In siege warfare, gunpowder made the castle obsolete, and Turkish cannon had already altered the course of European history by bringing down the walls of Constantinople. Gunpowder required no code of chivalry, and it was loyal to no particular master. Armies became larger and consisted of professional soldiers instead of shining knights and gangs of peasants with homemade weapons. These armies made the European kings much more powerful than they had ever been in the Medieval era.
