An arrow could penetrate a knight's armor as easily as a projectile from a firearm, but a soldier could be trained to use a firearm very quickly compared to the years of training needed to become an archer. In siege warfare, gunpowder made the castle obsolete, and Turkish cannon had already altered the course of European history by bringing down the walls of Constantinople. Gunpowder required no code of chivalry, and it was loyal to no particular master. Armies became larger and consisted of professional soldiers instead of shining knights and gangs of peasants with homemade weapons. These armies made the European kings much more powerful than they had ever been in the Medieval era.
