Otto Lilienthal flies his first manned glider in the first of series of over 2,000 experimental gliders
Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was the firstpassenger plane to fly overseas !!
they were the first to fly.
Amelia Earhart was the first female to fly by herself across the Atlantic Ocean. She was attempting to fly across the world whenever she disappeared in the 1930s.
Chuck Yeager was the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. He achieved this in 1947.
They were the first to fly an airplane successfully. The Wright brothers were not brilliant scientists, however they used scientific test and analysis to develope new designs that allowed the airplane to fly. They built a wind tunnel and measured the forces on their wing designs. They built gliders that were flown like a kit and then gliders that could carry a person. They added an engine to it and were the first person to fly a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft.
a banana!!
Otto Lilienthal was fascinated with birds and how they could fly, and in 1891 he designed the world's first functioning glider that could fly a person long distances. His book on aerodynamics was utilized by the Wright Brothers when making their designs.
The first powered aeroplane built that actually flew was made by Wilbur and Orville Wright in 1903. But there were unpowered gliders built by people like Otto Lilienthal before this time that were able to fly (or glide)
No. Gliders had been long around before the Wrights, Otto Lilienthal, whose work they studied extensively. Lilienthal was among the first (of many) to build gliders that were reliable and flew predictably, time after time. In aviation, 'firsts' are pretty irrelevant. To do something repeatedly and reliably is a much better proof of concept. The Wright flyer was one of the last glider-inspired designs before the 'modern' layout became the norm. "To invent an airplane is nothing. To build one is something. But to fly is everything." -Otto Lilienthal more info here: http://hawaii.psychology.msstate.edu/LilienthalMuseum/Lilmuseum.html
Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896) was one of the first men to fly. He designed, built, and flew many different designs of gliders. His gliders were designed to be controlled by shifting his weight, just like modern hang gliders. He died flying one of his powered gliders. The Wright brothers were inspired by his bi-plane designs.

Historians credit France's Montgolfier brothers with pioneering balloon flight in 1783, and Germany's Otto Lilienthal with the first successful glider flight in the 1890s. America's Wright brothers made the first successful flight in a small engine plane in 1903. While these accomplishments were certainly groundbreaking, they were far from man's first attempt to fly.
the brothers looked up to a man called Otto Lilienthal, who made a glider that flew over 2,000 times. also, Wilbur realized how buzzards glide when they fly, so they incorporated this into the 'Flier I'.
The first European to achieve powered flight is often credited to the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, who flew his 14-bis aircraft in Paris in 1906. However, earlier attempts at flight by Europeans date back to the late 19th century, with figures like Otto Lilienthal, a German pioneer known for his glider flights. It's important to note that while Lilienthal made significant contributions to aviation, Santos-Dumont is recognized for achieving the first controlled, powered flight in Europe.
The Wright Brothers were only one group of many who were trying to invent a powered airplane, and all of them were inspired by Otto Lilienthal, a German inventor who created gliders and flew on them. (Lilienthal also helped to invent the Fatal Airplane Crash, but that is a story for another time.) Lilienthal had to take off from a hill, had to fly only as the wind allowed him to and could only fly short distances. All the airplane inventors realized that if the airplane was to be a useful tool rather than a fun toy you had to be able to go when, where and as far as you wanted...and that meant putting an engine on it.
If you include gliders as aeroplanes, then (ignoring early anecdotal accounts), the first repeated glider flights took place around 1849 by George Cayley. Another pioneer aviator was Otto Lilienthal in the 1890s. These early machines had little endurance, and designs tended to copy bird features. Lilienthal's designs however did use a control frame, but the flight distances did not exceed 1000 ft.The Wright Brothers did very extensive testing on model gliders to optimize the design of their early flying machines. And eventually these tests led to successful powered flight.[Footnote. Are there any records of a repeat of the Wright Brothers early flight using the same materials?]One of the Wright Brothers.Wilbur Wright. Right?Orville wright flew the first plane.
The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African American pilots among the first to be allowed to fly planes for the US.
