Bartolomeu Dias led the first European expedition around the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. As he and his crew explored the shores of Cape Good Hope, they were attacked by indigenous people. In addition, low food supplies and rations had the crew on the verge of mutiny, he claimed the area for Portugal and headed home. Once in Lisbon, they were met with the cheers of their countrymen..
