After the death of Marcus Aurelius, the last of the Five Good Emperors, Rome descended into chaos. A civil war raged from 180 until 193, and only stopped after the death of Commodus. The senate became practically meaningless with members mainly being there because of connections to the emperor. Rome's growth stagnated, the leadership was incompetent and the atmosphere was one of chaos and rebellion.
Rome had to settle waves of incoming migrant peoples,who became the backbone of the army and eventually took over the Western Empire.
