The Channel Tunnel, or Chunnel as it is sometimes known, was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and French President François Mitterrand on 6 May 1994, in a ceremony held in Calais. On February 24, Police in Gloucester began excavations at 25 Cromwell Street, the home of 52-year-old builder Fred West, who was later charged with the murders of twelve women whose remains were found buried at his house. One of the women was his own daughter. The IRA launched 3 successive mortar attacks on Heathrow Airport on March 8, 10 and 13. On 2 June, A Royal Air Force Chinook helicopter carrying more than 20 top intelligence experts crashed on the Mull of Kintyre. Everyone on board was killed.
