In Clearwater, Florida the department store Maas Brothers closed down. This store was an icon. Situated at the end of Cleveland Street overlooking the bridge to Clearwater Beach and the water, this was the finest store of it's day. On the first floor, enclosed in glass windows on the west side, was the famous Suncoast Restaurant. Specialties included the Cooks Kettle (a metal crock of homemade soup and finger Sandwiches), Florentine Salad (spinach, cottage cheese and lemon jello), cinnamon sugar bread, and The Jose Gaspar (a delightful drink made with rum and fruit juices). They also had the best prime rib, roast lamb, lamb shanks and chicken pot pie among many other delicious choices. There was also a lunch counter where many employees ate. The store itself sold many fine items. From jewelry, clothing, furniture, to housewares, bridal gowns and fur storage, this was the place to shop where there was 'class'. The closing of this store was heartbreaking. Although there were a few other locations that were eventually turned into Burdines, this was the one that was the best. Downtown Clearwater has never been the same.
