It is also used for ceremonial purposes such as investitures. During the summer the Queen holds garden parties to which some of the people of Britain are invited to meet her.

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the British Royal family. It is a rallying point for the British nation in times of national celebrations and crises. It is closed to the public. Although, it is a tourist attraction to see the changing of the guards outside of the palace.
