The olive branch petition was sent after the second continental congress saying the the colonists still wanted to stay in contact with the British. King George rejected it and that made the colonists mad.

The Declaration of Independence was sent later and told the king that they basically wanted nothing to do with Britain anymore and were now asserting the independence from the british
