Grosse Ile or Isle, was Canada's version of the United State's Ellis Island. During the period of the Great Irish Famine, new immigrants had to be processed at Grosse Ile and in the year 1847, there were so many new arrivals sick with typhus, mostly Irish, that there were not enough beds to hold all of the sick on the island. There were miles of boats lying at anchor that became quarantine boats waiting to arrive at the island. Over 5000 people died on the boats and 5424 were buried on the Island. There is now a national monument and park at the site on the Island. See the related link for more information.

it was used as a quarentine base camp. The European immigrents crossed the ocean from Europe. When they arived in British North America, they were checked out. If they were sick they would stay in the Grosse Ile camp until they gotbetter or died. This left a lot of children to be orphans because their parents were dead or in the camp. But the children got to keep their names. They were sent there so they wouldnt get healthy people sick too.

Grosse Ile is a little island in Quebec that, during the time that the British were coming to Canada, the ones that were sick were sent there so that they would not infect the healthy people. As long as the people were healthy they got to stay on the coffin ships :) but if they were sick their familys had to leave them there to die kid or parent. :(
Grosse Isle in Quebec was the site of an immigration depot which predominantly housed Irish Immigrants coming to Canada to escape the Great Irish Famine, 1845-1849.
