The Middle Frankish Kingdom, or Middle Francia, was part of the Carolingian Empire, the empire established by Charlemagne. It had nothing to do with the Holy Roman Empire, which was established seventy-four years after the fall of the Carolingian Empire.
Middle Francia was created with the division of this the Carolingian Empire into three parts. Each one was given to one of the three sons of Emperor Louis the Pious. Middle Francia was given to Lothair I the eldest son. It comprised Holland Belgium, eastern France from Belgium to the Mediterranean coast (Alsace, Lorraine, Burgundy/Bourgogne and Provence) and Italy. One of his brothers was given West Francia (the rest of France) and the other East Francia (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). Lothair partitioned Middle Francia among his three sons.

France - A+France - A+The kingdom of Charles later became France, according to the treaty of Verdun when Charlemagne's empire was divided among his three grandsons. The Eastern Frankish kingdom,or the kingdom of Louis, eventually became Germany. The Western Frankish Kingdom, or the Kingdom of Charles, later became France, and the area in the center was called The Kingdom of Lothaire, where Belgium and Italy stand today.
The Frankish Empire, which is usually called the Carolingina Empire, started on December 25, 800 AD with the coronation of Charlemagne in Rome.
Under Frankish law, a kingdom did not pass to a single heir, but was distributed among the heirs. Under the Carolingian Empire, this was modified only to the point of having the empire go to a single heir, but there were numerous kingdoms controlled by different kings. The various kings quarrelled, and the overall emperor was only able to get support from his own kingdom, not from the empire as a whole, so the empire passed to a powerless state. Later, it was revived, but France remained separate from it; in this revived form, it was called the Holy Roman Empire.
Clovis was the first Catholic King of the Franks, and Charles (Charlemagne) was the most famous.
