Tom Thomson, who is widely regarded as the spiritual leader of the Group of Seven, died under mysterious circumstances in July, 1917, at Ontario's Algonquin Park. Thomson was never an actual member of the Group, because it was not formed until 1919. The Group's first exhibition was in 1920.
