Queen Matilda In English History, the term "Middle Ages" is taken to mean the period between the Norman Conquest in 1066 and the end of The Wars of the Roses in 1485. It is also known as the Medieval Age. Mediaval is just a fancy word derived from Latin words meaning "middle" and "age." In 1100, Henry, the fourth son of William the Conqueror became King of England as Henry I. His son, William Adelin should have inherited the crown but he died in 1120, leaving only Henry's daughter, Matilda as his heir. The situation was resolved when it was agreed that Matilda's son by Geoffrey of Anjou would become King when Stephen died. Her son became King on 25th October 1154, as King Henry II and he was the first King from the House of Plantagenet.
