Paul Reuter was born Jewish, in the city of Kassel, Germany, on July 21, 1816. His original name was Israel Beer Josaphat, and he was a rabbi's son. In 1845, he moved to London and changed his named to Reuter.

In 1851, Reuter started a telegraph office in London and sent stock market quotes between London and Paris. He devoted the following 7 years to building his agency and selling his services to newspapers. His news agency, known as Reuters, eventually became indispensable to British newspapers.

And the rest is history.
