Survival was a day to day struggle. Diseases we seldom see now, killed many. Women died giving birth. Children worked in the fields with their parents at an early age. There was little money. Work was physically demanding. Families had to put their kids to work to make enough money to keep food in their mouths and keep a roof over their heads. This was a real tough time to live.
