The first city to be founded in Australia was Sydney, which was founded with the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. At this stage, of course, it was not a city, but a small colonial settlement which grew into a town and, after many decades, gained city status.

Australia's first and only capital city was and is Canberra.

There is a common misconception that Melbourne was once Australia's capital city, but this was never the case. It was only ever the temporary seat of power, as it was the only city with a building large enough to house Parliament whilst Canberra was being built.

The first state in Australia was New South Wales. James Cook claimed the entire eastern half of the continent under the name of New South Wales.
