it was really really cheap. they used to use indentured servants which were white or black. indentured servants would work for their master for like 8 years or so, and after such time they would be free, along with theoretically land. slaves were much more efficient, since they were hard working, 100% free, and would work for you until they died
Native Africans were brought to North America as slaves, hundreds of years ago. The English and Spanish Settlers needed a labor force, and unlike the Native Americans they were using before, Native Africans were immune to the diseases the European settlers brought with them to "The New World". They were also used to picking crops/gathering food; this made them far better workers than Native American slaves.
Your question needs work because we don't have your choices, but I will give you an answer. Northern colonies didn't have plantations and didn't have slaves so this part of your question is incorrect. The southern plantation owners used slaves for the large acres of crops they grew that required intensive work as well as slaves to work in the house and raise children. After the invention of the cotton gin more slaves were needed and the amount of cotton grown related directly to the numbers of slaves that were needed. By 1860 there were over 4 million slaves on southern plantations.
The Africans that were enslaved in the Southern Colonies were the main workforce because the settlers did not have the endurance or skills to do the work. Africans were strong, skilled, and were able to endure the climate better than the people who enslaved them.

The main reason the Portuguese and Spanish enslaved Africans in New World colonies was to meet the demand for labor in industries like mining and agriculture. Africans were seen as a ready source of labor due to their physical capability, and the transatlantic slave trade provided a constant supply of enslaved people to support the economic development of the colonies.
The slaves were not needed because the climate was too cold and the Africans worked better in the heat and there were more things to do for the slaves.
