it was really really cheap. they used to use indentured servants which were white or black. indentured servants would work for their master for like 8 years or so, and after such time they would be free, along with theoretically land. slaves were much more efficient, since they were hard working, 100% free, and would work for you until they died

And unlike the natives, Africans provided cheap labour. And mostly, no payment at all. All they were given was food, water, shelter and few essential necessaties. And Africans were very strong compared to the native workers.

Native Africans were brought to North America as slaves, hundreds of years ago. The English and Spanish Settlers needed a labor force, and unlike the Native Americans they were using before, Native Africans were immune to the diseases the European settlers brought with them to "The New World". They were also used to picking crops/gathering food; this made them far better workers than Native American slaves.

Africans were brought to the colonies as a labor force. The colonists were unaccustomed to manual labor, and the native populations were not immune to European diseases. Many Africans were farmers and they had been exposed to similar diseases as the Europeans, so they thrived.

Your question needs work because we don't have your choices, but I will give you an answer. Northern colonies didn't have plantations and didn't have slaves so this part of your question is incorrect. The southern plantation owners used slaves for the large acres of crops they grew that required intensive work as well as slaves to work in the house and raise children. After the invention of the cotton gin more slaves were needed and the amount of cotton grown related directly to the numbers of slaves that were needed. By 1860 there were over 4 million slaves on southern plantations.
