In the days of Charles 1, John Pym was the senior figure in the House Of Commons, what is known nowadays as the Leader of the House. A Puritan, he was against the King, and probably the biggest thorn in his side. It was Pym and four others that Charles wanted to arrest when he stormed into the House of Commons on the 4th January 1642, starting the Civil War.
