Actually, Saxon women were not cooks. They did baking but no other cooking. The Saxon word for cook, coc, is found only in the male form but baker is found in the male and female form. It wasn't as much a warring environment as people think and like today there were warriors and other jobs - not all men today are in the forces! There were farmers, potters, wheelwrights, carpenters, brewers, cobblers, blacksmiths, jewellers et al.
