it stopped because it was a law in the Quing Dynasty that no woman under the age of 15 was allowed to have bound feet. Some women did so anyway and they were fined, beat, humilated and critisised.

It started in the 900's, after a dancer with bound feet performed for the emperor. After that, it became a status symbol, only rich people being able to have bound feet, since peasants wouldn't be able to work efficiently with bound feet.
