Hong Kong Island had been a port in the province of Kwangtung (China) before 1830's or 1840's. After the Opium War, the Island was borrowed by the British. Later (after a war or something like that), Kowloon and New Territories were borrowed by the British for 99 years. So, in 1997, all 3 areas were returned to China. Another city, Macau, was a port borrowed by Portugal in 1600's. It was returned to China in 1999.
