It's a *Doge, not a dodge. A Doge was the leader of the Republic of Venice, which no longer exists. Once a Doge was elected, their term lasted for the remainder of their life.
Back then it was Italian.
In Venice they moved all the sick people to an island and allowed them to die. Over 5,000 a day died in Venice at the height of the plague.

According to legend, the city of Venice on the Italian peninsula was founded in 421.
According to Wikipedia, it was founded in the 1870's by Richard Roberts. First railroad there was built in 1911, which is when the place started expanding pretty quickly.
