He cut off a Native American hand because the man only brought him gold nuggets. Columbus, despite the popular belief, did NOT land in North America. Nor did he "find" it and his 4 voyages to the "New World" were very much failures. On the last one he was shipwrecked for over a year before help came and soon after getting back home he died. His youngest son sued the Spanish crown ( didn't win) for the deal his father had made with them when he sailed in 1492.
